Day 6, 4th December

Day 6 started with removing all overburden topsiols throughout the trench. Due to the very sharpe incline on the east side of the trench it was at times a difficult matter to access, however, both Sara and Dave D managed to finished removing overburden on this side with ease.

The removal of overburden topsoils revealed after cleaning no evidence for archaeological features such as post holes, pits or gullies commensrate with this type of site. Undaunted however, I decided that we remove the upper layers of the rampart and bank working towards the interior of the camp to the edge of out trench. This was done in 10cm spits.

This part of the bank was still contaminated by modern and 19th century debris, for example, glass and small fragments of late 19th century slip ware. By mid afternoon we found a linier feature running approx north south at the bottom of the bank in the west section of the trench, possibly the larger stones denoting the edge of the rampart. further to the west of this feature appears to be a compacted layer of small to medium size stones, possibly some sort of surface. These finds conicided with the arrival of Ken and friends who offered encouragement and seemed please and impressed with our work thus far.

Tomorrow we intend to examine and record features revealed, so an exciting and interesting day awaits.
