Trench 1 - The Wilderness
Weekend Dig 10th Oct 09 - Some exciting Finds!
No finds this week, at all!! So I thought it would be a good idea to look at some finds that turned up a few weeks ago.
Derrick carried out a sweep over the trench and detected a strong signal above the back of the bank where most of the finds have been coming from. A group of 3 items were found together. A small degraded copper item [5] was found which seemed to be in a finger shape, like a thimble was just under the surface, with a lead spinning Whorl [3] which has a pattern on it a couple of centimetres beneath it, which was laying on a shaped stone [4]. Thanks to Dave who was the first to spot that the stone fitted perfectly through the hole in the centre of the lead whorl, Seeing these items were found so close together it is possible that they were contained in a leather pouch which has now rotted away. Any thoughts about a use for the stone?
Most of the finds in Trench 1 come from the back of the bank. It is likely that they have come from the southern enclosure and fallen down to be trapped on the back of the bank, so finding domestic items is very exciting.
Further along the bank Derrick found a iron belt buckle or horse harness buckle and finally, a large lump of corral or degraded bone was found close to the large stone at that the top of the trench. Interesting!
