The Cadw Dig, Day One

Day one of the dig started with the clearance of small trees and under growth in order to allow the archaeological team access to the area of the upper rampart the main part of the fort under investigation. This archaeological evaluation is part of a preservation and consolidation project permitted by Cadw as part of a small scheme of works aimed at the protection of this significent archaeological monument.

A team from Wrexham Btcv were contracted to carry out the clearance work on the hill fort at Caer Alyn. They worked very hard on a cold Tuesday to clear the way for the the archaeologists from Caer Alyn led by Tony Hanna Project Archaeologist and Asst Archaeologists Dave Duce, Neil Adams to open up the evaluation trench.

The evaluation trench was set out by the archaeologists Tony and Dave on an approximate east west alignment, and the trench measured 10m x 2m. The trench transected the upper rampart of the east bank of the hill fort.
