A day at the lab
On the 20th of September 2010, Lydia (one of the students that attended this year’s Caer Alyn summer school) attended a scientific equipment familiarisation day At Daresbury Labs I-Tac department. The training was carried out by Alan Brown.
Lydia used a Phillips X-ray diffraction set to scan a piece of Roman pottery. This identifies the mineralogy of the fired clay.
Lydia also used the latest Hitachi desktop Scanning Electron Microscope with EDS. With EDS (Energy Dispersed Spectroscopy) it is possible to determine which elements are present in the surface layer (to depths in the micrometer range) of the sample.
Five samples were scanned including a Roman black burnish pot (open analysis doc below)
