Julie Edwards (Chester Archaeology) Visit 1st May 2010

On Saturday May 1st, Julie Edwards, Cheshire Archaeology, visited Caer Alyn to have a look at the finds from trench 14 and to help the volunteers identify the finds. The visit was a great success from our point of view and is documented in the attachment.

Weekend Dig 10th Oct 09 - Some exciting Finds!

No finds this week, at all!! So I thought it would be a good idea to look at some finds that turned up a few weeks ago. Derrick carried out a sweep over the trench and detected a strong signal above the back of the bank where most of the finds have been coming from.

Activities Over last month

The last month has seen activity in trench 14 and the new enclosure area, with no further work on BOB yet. The attachment gives a brief summary of the activities and the photograph of Phil and his badge, found in the enclosure is an omen!

Dig Diary from BOB trench 4th October 2008

Last week we continued the excavation on the BOB trench. The trenches put in over the geophysics "dark patches" seem to suggest that there is no structure here and we may well be winding up the excavation work here. The next few weeks will probably be taken up recording, photographing and back filling.

Dig Diary for 6th September 2008 on BOB

The dig diarier are about the excavations on the possible croft area. I have added the name BOB to the title as BOB (back of beyond) best describes the location and it is what we all lovingly call the trench. So.... BOB it is. This week we found some interesting things with the help of Derrick and his metal detector and almost got "traumatised" by the apparent bricks underneath our earliest foundations.

The Enigmatic Boulder

The excavations in the croft field have unearther a granite boulder that appears to be "wedged" in place inside the building we are excavating. It does not have a flat top and it is relatively small (see picture). Does anyone out there have any ideas as to what its function was? One idea (my wifes) was that it could have been put there for boars to rub their tusks against to wear them down a bit.
