Days 14 and 15, the 15th and 17th of DecemberSaturday was another cold but dry day, great for digging not so good for recording and surveying. The team managed to do a bit of all three. Also, we decided to investigate further the collapse of large boulder stones on the inner side of the rampart in order to discern any evidence for structural phasing. 5395 visits |
Days 12 and 13, the 13th and 14th December 2007Both days we consentrated on cleaning and recording the collaspe on the inside of the rampart, located on the west end of the trench. There appears to be two phases of collasped stone and gravel debris from this side of the rampart. In order to understand this part of the archaeology we have implimated a methodology of cleaning back, planning and excavating the layers of collasped stone. 3841 visits |
Day 11, 12th December 2007The excavation has revealed a reasonable stone structure, and due to limited time and manpower and project remit, cleaning and recording of all features is now a priority. Myself and 3 other members of the project today did just that.

Day 8, 7th Dec 2007Today it appears the the possible cobbled surface was, on further investigation, no more that the collaspe from the west side of the rampart.
The feature on top of the rampart, on further invesigation, appears to be a cut for a dry stone wall cut into the east (outer) side of the rampart. 3150 visits |

Day 7, Dec 5thDay 7 began with a quick clean up in and around the trench, making sure the growing spoil heap was a good 2m from the edge of our trench.
The team was split into 2 groups. One group Neil, John and myself worked on the top of the rampart removing the layers in spits, carefully looking for archaeological features, for example, post holes or pits. 3690 visits |
