Trench 1 - The Wilderness III

Weekend Dig 24th October 2009

This week a major assault on the ditch took place. It has always been unclear whether the ditch was 2m wide at the surface, or much wider, as the damp area could be read either way. At a depth of 90cm there is a very clear grey/green band of clay, so we chased that layer back out away from the stone revetment, hoping to find a change as we hit the ditch edge.

Over the last two weeks in February we have continued working on Trench 16 and have opened up Trench 18, which will hopefully not have too amny telephone cables in it. The embankment in the new trench 18 looks similar to that in Trench 16, so that is goo

TRENCH 1 - THE WILDERNESS - The Ditch

Weekend Dig 3rd October 2009

This week we focused on the ditch at the foot of the bank. When the trench was initially opened we were fortunate to have had some heavy rain, so as the trench dried out, a 2m wide patch became clear.

The Ditch Part 2

An exploratory slot was opened several weeks ago in the ditch area, and we reached a depth of 1m, and seem still to be going down. This week we opened up the slot to half the trench width, to get some elbow room to go deeper.

Weekend Dig 10th Oct 09 - Some exciting Finds!

No finds this week, at all!! So I thought it would be a good idea to look at some finds that turned up a few weeks ago. Derrick carried out a sweep over the trench and detected a strong signal above the back of the bank where most of the finds have been coming from.

Rock Art

In mid march, members of Caer Alyn visited Caer Alyn for a weekend of Rock Art hunting on Barningham Moor, North Yorkshire. The accomodation was good, the rock art was fantastic, the pub was............."interesting" and the company wonderul. Two versions of the weekends events are attached, one by myself and a more entertaining one by Beverly.

2009 Summer Dig Diary

Monday 3rd August 2009

Excavations started today on an earthwork feature near to the southern enclosure of the Bryn Alyn hiilfort. An 8 x 1.5 metre trench was opened up across the feature which revealed a bank, with a ditch at the eastern end of the trench. Work will continue on Tuesday to reveal the ditch at the western end of the trench.
