CAER ALYN YOUTH ARCHAEOLOGY GROUP - THE FIRST 12 MONTHS

CAYA has done very well since 22nd. of September 2007. We have 14 children on the register and there are more who would like to start this September. The activities have ranged from helping on Trench 14 to learning about the Ancient Egyptians, to visiting Moel Fenlli with Fiona Gale to hosting an Archaeology day for Denbigh and District YAC branch.
As the year went by we have modified our activities according to the needs of our members who, generally, preferred being outside helping in trench 14. We have felt that the senior members of CAYA needed to be stretched more so they have been given the opportunity to work more closely with the other Project volunteers and to have more responsibility in organising the Youth section of the Project’s web site. So in June they had tuition from Mike and Lorie who have set up our web site in which they have learnt to add their own information to the web site as well as suggesting modifications to the Youth section. I believe that we could have a new star presenter in Jamie as he has generated over 200 hits on the website for his test video presentation!
This year the senior CAYA members suggested, organised and implemented the activities for the Open Day very successfully! They also wore the new CAYA polo shirts with Jamie’s logo design.
As for the next 12 months, we hope to involve the CAYA members in more activities with the Project such as the Round house and a project examining the soil type and soil pH in the trenches! Also we have been led by the members as to which wet or winter day activities they want to explore such as Saxons, art and games through history, history of China and Japan etc. Hopefully we can fit in a visit to local interesting places like Stretton Water Mill.
I would like to thank Ken and Russell for the use of their conference room and all their generous support over this last year. I also would like to thank Patrick and all the Project volunteers who have helped and supported our youth group. Finally I would like to give a very big thank you to all our members and their parents as well as Karen, Phil and Colin for all their hard work without which we would not have the Caer Alyn Youth Archaeology.
